Rose Campion is a native plant of North Africa, Southern Europe and the Middle East. Today, this vibrant and classic flower has been naturalized in most parts of North America. Rose Campion will add a brilliant show of magenta and bright pink flowers to your garden. This truly is the perfect addition to any garden but is truly special for cottage style gardening. The soft grey green foliage is very reminiscent of lamb's ear, which gives a softness to the garden space. It is a hardy but short-lived perennial in zones 4 through 8 but I have successfully grown it in zone 3 many times over. It's capacity to re-seed itself is prolific and it should be given consideration when planting. Leave a few flowers on at the end of each flowering season so it can re-seed and rejuvenate itself. To successfully re-seed the seeds will need a stratification period. We always freeze our collected Rose Campion seeds here at Pangea but if you collect your own make sure you freeze/cool them sufficiently before planting. Removing spent flowers throughout the summer will encourage consistent and regular flowering. In the fall time, we recommend cutting them back to a third of their size before winter sets in. Plant in full sun or partial shade for best results. Rose campion is a successful grower in poor soil conditions and in drought conditions as well. There are very few pest or disease issues for Rose Campion.
Sow seeds 8-10 weeks before last frost. When sowing seeds, ensure that you do not cover or seed too deep. Rose Campion needs light to germinate. Germination should occur within 7-21 days. Alternatively, you can directly sow seeds into your garden as it would naturally. To increase the rate of germination, lightly till or turn up the soil to allow a little more airspace. Water thoroughly and maintain a consistent moisture throughout the germination period.
